The path to an innovative thesis

Birgit Reuter, a graduate of the Mechatronics Bachelor's degree program at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, has dedicated her thesis to an exciting project: an original design of an ergonomic handle for KÖCO Classic pistols.  

But why did she choose this topic and what challenges did she have to overcome? We talked to her about this in an interview.

Hello Birgit. Thank you for letting us ask you a few questions about your thesis! Let's start from the very beginning: What did you study? And where? 

I started my studies at Bochum University of Applied Sciences in the field of electrical engineering before deciding to switch to mechatronics. During my four years of work on a student project, I was already able to lead the development of an electric off-roader and then decided to switch to the bachelor's degree program in mechatronics, as this subject area interested me even more. 

What is the topic of your final thesis and why did you choose it? 

My thesis is entitled "An original design of an ergonomic grip for KÖCO Classic pistols". The decision in favour of this topic came about as a result of a job advertisement at KÖCO, to which I initially applied. During my subsequent full-time internship at the company and feedback from a KÖCO partner that the handles of the KÖCO Classic pistols were sometimes a little awkward to handle provided the impetus for my project. I decided to write my bachelor's thesis on the design of a new welding gun handle for the Classic series. 

Did you experience any major challenges during your research and while working on your thesis? 

The biggest challenge was the lack of consideration of ergonomic aspects in previous designs of the guns. The combination of ergonomics and industrial design was crucial for me in the development process. I also analyzed health data as part of my work to ensure that my design met the requirements for ergonomics and handling. 

Which role did KÖCO play in the preparation of your thesis? 

The co-operation with KÖCO played a central role. I received all the information and materials I needed for my research work directly from the company's appliance construction department. Through numerous discussions with the employees at KÖCO, I was also able to familiarize myself with the other areas of the company and was always actively supported during the preparation of my thesis. 

And now you have a permanent position in the KÖCO development department. Can your daily work be combined with your previous studies? 

I can contribute my previous experience and what I learnt during my studies to the company's work. My work at the Institute for Electromobility during my studies has already prepared me for the field of design, even though it mainly involved smaller projects. 

I'm looking forward to new challenges in stud welding technology and working on exciting design projects!
