Which stud welding products does KÖCO offer?

Which stud types can be welded using the drawn arc process?

Drawn arc stud welding is highly versatile. All of the following stud types can be joined using the same welding process: threaded studs, shear connectors, internally threaded sleeves, boiler pins, flat pins, wave anchors, break-off studs, and countless other geometries – all welded using the same method.

How does the drawn arc stud welding process with ceramic ferrule work?

The process (Process 738) is fundamentally the same for all stud types – whether shear connectors, threaded studs, or special studs. Pressing the trigger on the welding gun starts the process. The stud lifts from the workpiece by a predefined lift height and is held in this position. After the set welding time ends, the stud plunges – still hot and current-carrying – into the molten weld pool of the base material.

Which special studs must be used for welding with shielding gas?

In drawn arc stud welding with shielding gas, special studs without aluminum additions must be used. These differ from ceramic ferrule studs in the geometry of the ignition tip – there is no aluminum coating or aluminum ball, and none is needed. In fact, the aluminum ball in combination with the shielding gas can even have a negative effect on the welding result.

Which type of bolt is suitable for refractory linings?

Corrugated bolts and boiler pins are predominantly used for refractory linings. Corrugated bolts permanently anchor refractory materials to steel beams and vessel walls; their corrugated geometry increases the contact area with the refractory material. Boiler pins are used for insulation mats and thermal insulation boards. Both types are set using arc-ignition stud welding – without drilling, in a single operation.

What is the difference between ceramic ring studs and inert gas studs?

There are two variants of arc-ignition stud welding: with a ceramic ring (process 738) or with inert gas (process 783). Ceramic ring studs have an aluminium coating or aluminium ball at the ignition tip, which stabilises the arc. Inert gas studs do not have this coating – it would have a negative effect on the weld result when combined with the inert gas. The studs look similar, but are not interchangeable.

The most common source of error when selecting products is confusing ceramic-ring electrodes with inert-gas electrodes. Both look similar – the key difference lies in the tip geometry: ceramic-ring electrodes have an aluminium coating on the tip, whereas inert-gas electrodes do not. Anyone who confuses the two risks welding defects that only become apparent during the bend test.
